Since our launch in 2010, SF Rising has developed into an effective grassroots electoral alliance with a track record of success. Our collaboration and leadership has helped us become what one local website calls “one of the most important organizations in San Francisco politics today.”

Job Description:  Political Director

San Francisco Rising Alliance: February 2016

The Political Director of the San Francisco Rising Alliance (SFR) helps develop and implement SFR’s strategy vision through campaign and policy work. The Political Director leads SFR’s electoral and policy work in conjunction with the alliance’s member organizations, and builds unity amongst our organizations to grow the power of working class communities of color in San Francisco and beyond..

Electoral Campaign and Policy Development (40%)

  • Coordinate with SFR members and staff to plan and implement electoral and policy goals and strategies
  • Coordinate with SFR member organizations to plan and direct all aspects of SFR’s electoral and policy campaigns
  • Successfully implement the political strategy of the organization’s programmatic work
  • Effectively engage the members and staff of the member organizations in the development of the campaign work, the implementation and development of the strategy, and the evaluation of our efforts
  • Facilitate the development of strong relationships between SFR member organizations and decision-makers locally and statewide
  • Lead SFR’s participation in building a regional organization (Bay Area Rising) with key partners to address regional inequity and civic engagement

 

Field Coordination (25%)

  • Develop long and short term electoral plans and field goals with active support and input from the SFR member organizations
  • Direct and administer field operations to meet agreed upon goals; including phone banks, canvases, and mobilizations for paid canvassers and volunteers
  • Hire and supervise temporary paid field canvassers and volunteers
  • Develop and manage campaign budgets
  • Improve the field operations of the alliance by evaluating campaigns and developing new systems and processes
  • Produce post-campaign reports tracking outcomes, alliance developments, and political impacts

Internal Organizing and Alliance Coordination (25%)

  • Coordinate and direct SFR’s Leadership Committee
  • Coordinate and direct SFR’s bi-annual grassroots membership assemblies
  • Coordinate SFR’s monthly member meetings
  • Support SFR’s work area committees including: Field & Member Engagement Committee and Fundraising Committee
  • Plan and facilitate SFR’s bi-annual planning and evaluation retreats

 

Other Responsibilities (10%)

 

  • Plan and direct training programs to support capacity building, political education, and campaign implementation amongst SFR’s member organizations
  • With direction from the Fundraising Committee, implement grassroots and foundation fundraising work plans including writing reports and grant applications
  • Represent SFR with local and state ally organizations and coalitions
  • Develop external communications as needed for SFR including electronic newsletters, social media, and website postings

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, bottom-up social change and building social movements
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience
  • Ability to facilitate processes with alliance member organizations
  • Ability to problem solve and initiate solutions
  • Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and project management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Compensation:

Salary range: $45,000 to $55,000 per year with benefits

Additional Duties:

The position will require some work during nights and weekends, as needed, and may require driving.
